Racing in Chandler
Chandler’s desert landscape hides a high-octane secret: it’s a hub for motorsports in the Southwest. With two iconic facilities just minutes apart, locals and visitors alike get access to world-class racing experiences. Whether you're chasing a standing 1/4-mile personal best or learning threshold braking in a controlled environment, Chandler delivers. The dry climate and wide-open space make it ideal for year-round track time, and both tracks draw serious enthusiasts—from weekend warriors to professional drivers honing their craft.
Choosing the Right Track
Your goals determine where you belong. If straight-line speed and reaction time are your thing, Firebird Motorsports Park is your home. As one of the region’s top NHRA-sanctioned drag strips, Firebird hosts weekly bracket races, test-and-tune nights, and even rookie drag schools. It’s open to streetcars, bikes, and full-on race machines. If you’ve ever wanted to stage at the Christmas Tree, this is the place to start.
On the other hand, if you want to master cornering, drifting, or high-speed handling, head to Radford Racing School (formerly Bondurant). Founded in 1968 by F1 veteran Bob Bondurant, this 300-acre facility is legendary for performance driving education. Their programs focus on car control, advanced track techniques, and even defensive driving—many Hollywood stunt drivers trained here. Unlike Firebird, Radford is not an open-entry track; you must enroll in a course. But the structured, safety-first instruction makes it invaluable for drivers at all levels.
Planning Your Visit
Chandler gets hot—really hot—so plan accordingly. Mornings and winter months are best for comfort and track conditions. Both facilities are located near I-10 and Loop 202, making them easy to access from Phoenix or Mesa, but don’t rely on nearby services. Fuel up and grab supplies before heading south on Kyrene Road.
At Firebird, bring your DOT-approved helmet and ensure your vehicle passes basic safety checks—no fluid leaks, secure battery, and working shutdown systems for faster cars. Entry lists and event calendars are posted weekly online; some nights fill fast, especially during championship seasons.
At Radford Racing School, arrive early. Classes run on strict schedules, and check-in includes safety briefings and gear fitting. Most courses provide vehicles (think Mustangs, Corvettes, and pro drift cars), so you don’t need to bring your own—just wear snug shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. No open-toed shoes.
Both venues respect motorsports etiquette: listen to flaggers, follow course marshals, and keep noise and trash in check. Chandler’s racing scene thrives on mutual respect—show up ready to learn, stay humble, and you’ll leave with stories and speed.
